With spring here, there’s no better time to tackle home improvements. Paint can be one of the easiest, and most impactful, improvements of all. One of the best places to start is with the front door. A color refresh of a front door can do wonders for curb appeal. If you’re still looking for color inspiration beyond Dunn-Edwards’ most popular front door colors, you’ll be excited to know we’re sharing the paint colors that are these Dunn-Edwards featured designers’ front door favorites.
Front Door: Espresso Macchiato (DET680)
Dunn-Edwards’ student design competition judge and owner of JL Interiors, Jason Lai, loves darker, gray-infused colors for their versatility. Carbon Dating (DET592), Harbor Mist Gray (DET515), and Made of Steel (DET593) are some of Bravo TV star’s go-to front door paint colors. “A dark front door really grounds the entryway of your home and draws attention to itself, inviting you in, which gives you a sense of warmth and coziness for you and your guest,” explains Lai.
When it comes to ensuring you’re picking the right color for your home, Lai suggests going big with the swatch. “Make sure to paint a sizable paint swatch on an area that gets sun and shade,” shares the designer. Being able to see how a color reacts in different lighting scenarios so you can compare the color helps make it easier to pick the ideal paint color for your home’s front door.
After a front door paint makeover Lai also suggests one additional pro tip—incorporating the same color elsewhere amid the home's exterior. “That could mean lighting fixtures, planters, florals/greenery or even a welcome rug! It helps it all tie together,” he says.
When One Room Challenge participant and lifestyle blogger Annette Vartanian of A Vintage Splendor thinks front door colors, she looks for hues that are timeless and can lend themselves to a variety of aesthetics. “Summer Seagrass is a beautiful neutral green color that delivers the perky mood of summer but in a calm and soothing fashion. I love this choice for Spanish Colonial or French inspired Farmhouse architecture,” she shares. And in fact, Vartanian isn’t the only one that loves this soothing green and its versatility, Summer Seagrass (DEFD34) is Dunn-Edwards #2 top-selling front door color.
For the front door, Vartanian also loves paint colors that are mysterious, yet inviting like Dark Shadows (DEA183). Of the gray-green color, she notes, “It keeps me intrigued and excited to see what I'll find when I go inside. I love the idea of pairing this with a traditional brick home, or an ultra-modern home with natural wood tones.”
Designer Paul Heintz, owner of Local Studio shares that you can never go wrong when it comes to classic front door colors. Classic White (DEHW08) on a front door provides a nice contrast and a focal point for a darker-toned house. Another classic hue, Red-y For Fun (DEFD14) —our #4 top selling front door color— is another classic color choice, but for those looking to draw a little more attention from passers-by. Heintz says “Red-y For Fun is always a "go-to" in high gloss for the homeowner who wants that pop.”
The absolute go-to front door paint color for the Joshua Tree and Hudson Valley-based designer, he admits however, is Espresso Macchiato (DET680). Part of its appeal, Heintz explains, is in the color’s sheer versatility. “Espresso Macchiato adds a bold contrast to the façade without being overwhelming, it works easily with different hardware metal finishes and feels timeless. This color is versatile with all home styles making it popular in our books.
