Retail Space Gets a Sweet, Modern Makeover for Roll’d Ice Cream

Finding the perfect white can make or break a project. No one knows that better than California central coast firm AGD Architecture and Design (AGD). Their client, San Luis Obispo-based ice cream company Roll’d Ice Cream, wanted a design for their retail space that was clean, modern, and let their innovative ice cream stand out as the main attraction. For AGD founder and architect Andrew Goodwin, that perfect white for his remodel of the storefront was Igloo (DEW379) by Dunn-Edwards.
The retail space, which measures about 850 square feet (with only half of that visible to customers), had previously been an acai bowl eatery, and before that, a Subway. Before Roll’d, the space featured Saltillo tile, a mix of earth tones and tropical colors on the walls. An aesthetic that certainly did not fit with the ice cream brand’s clean and modern look.
It took about three months to transform the space into Roll’d Ice Cream’s shop. White walls and soffits brighten the modest eatery, and allow the brand’s blue logo (a brand match but close to Sail Away (DE5836)) to stand out. Stained wood beams, shelving, cabinets and accents throughout add some warmth and texture.
For their projects, AGD uses Dunn-Edwards’ Suprema paint products. “We like working with Dunn-Edwards,” says Goodwin, “because of their commitment to the environment and their ability to help with any paint, stains and sealers.”
The Dunn-Edwards in-store team also helped AGD select a wood stain that unified the look. “We had different pieces of woods throughout the space that needed to look the same,” says Goodwin.
In the end, the small shop achieved a modern and inviting look. Goodwin describes the new design as “a gentle mix of modern farmhouse and modern beach house.”
AGD is currently working on several modern homes from Sonoma County to Riverside County. Commercial projects, such as retail shops, restaurants and wineries are also slated for the coming year.
