Renovation Dream: A Mid-century Design Overhaul
07/08/2019 | Sara McLean |
Rebecca and Jared Raskind, the husband-and-wife team behind many creative renovation projects — some which have been highlighted on Elle Décor, Domino and other design sites — recently completed the remodel of a Hollywood Hills Mid-century residence. With assistance from Dunn-Edwards on paint and color selections from the Dunn-Edwards 2020 color + design trends, what once was a fixer is now a dream. We recently discussed the background and outcome of this project and more:

Please tell us about you and your company, as well as your background in design that would
lead to an interest in flipping homes.
My husband Jared and I have been drawn to home-renovation projects for years. The first home we purchased several years ago was a 1936 Spanish fixer. We did some light cosmetic renovations, as well as a garage conversion. It was a fun project and the final product was so satisfying. We were even featured on multiple online design sites like In-Style, Apartment Therapy, BHG, Domino, Style Me Pretty Living and Elle Décor. When it was time to sell our home, we received 15 offers in five days and sold far over asking.

Next, we bought and fully renovated a 3,000-square-foot 1990s home from top to bottom. Our kitchen renovation was recently featured on Design Sponge. The success of both these projects, and the creative energy we were able to exercise, led us to wanting to explore various opportunities to revive properties we would not be living in ourselves.
Please describe your design aesthetic and how you showcase this through your home flip designs.
I would describe our overall design aesthetic as bold, playful and eclectic with a nice blend of masculine and feminine energy. For furnishings, we like to incorporate a mix of Mid-century modern and more classic Hollywood Regency styles with a touch of California bohemian. The overall look tends to be timeless and conversational. With revival properties, we may start with a crisp white palette but aren’t afraid to use bold paint color, incorporate a graphic tile, dramatic marble or interesting wallpaper to give the property a distinctive voice.

Please describe your partnership with Dunn-Edwards on this house flip and how you incorporated
2020 trends colors into the palette.
It was great working with Dunn-Edwards on this Mid-century revival project! I was drawn to the "Neu Traditions" palette (from the Dunn-Edwards 2020 color + design trends) for the Mid-century revival, in particular, because we were able to incorporate sophisticated and bold colors (like Deepest Sea in the kitchen and guest room) against a clean fresh backdrop (Whisper). I felt it really worked with the graphic, Mid-century lines of the home.
We drew from the rest of the palette to add points of interest within the space such as the cool, soothing Granite we used for the office/bonus room, which we accented with a Rosewine-toned blanket and Warm Hearth-toned, worn leather chair. We were able to incorporate pops of Fuzzy Duckling yellow throughout the master bedroom and guest room, as well as delicate, feminine Light Carob in the laundry closet and with pottery in the kitchen and living room.

We continued the bold-meets-delicate paint scheme on the home’s exterior with the strong and deep Anchor Gray and Cover of Night co-existing with crisp White Picket Fence and with pastel Minty Fresh and Crestline accent colors. To complete the aesthetic, we worked with Meridith Baer on staging the property for sale.

This home feels like a sophisticated mix of masculine and feminine, strong and subtle — which is really the essence of the "Neu Traditions" trend palette and fully encompasses our personal design aesthetic.
What’s next for you?
We were thrilled with the success of our Mid-century revival project. The home did not even make it to market before selling to a buyer who is absolutely in love with the home, which is truly the best feeling in the world! We have our eyes open for our next revival project and look forward to once again creating a home that will make an immediate emotional connection with its eventual owner.
