October is the month that we associate with changing colors and falling leaves, harvesting crops, and getting cozy. Fittingly, this deep garnet color calls to mind all of the above, which is why we’re highlighting it as our October Color of the Month.
We’ve explored reds recently in our Well Intentions color story as part of our 2023 Color + Design Trends reveal. For some striking red inspiration, you can see how saturated red tones pair well with warm neutrals and can be used to produce a California desert aesthetic.
A Brief History of Red
Aside from black and white, red is the color which humans first see. From the use of red clay body paint in the stone age, to the use of red powder in Paleolithic burial rituals, according to Google Arts and Culture, red has long been a dominant culture for civilizations across history. In ancient Rome, the color red, mined from the mineral cinnabar, was highly prized as a color for interior decorative accents.
Further, during the Middle Ages, Charlemagne was obsessed with the color red, notes the Guardian. From painting his palace red, to wearing the color prominently across various garments, the bold color was front and center during his reign. In later centuries, beginning with such instances as the French Revolution, red gained popularity as a color of progressive movements and left-wing politics like the Bolshevik Revolution, explains western symbology expert and author, Michel Pastoureau, in his book of Red: The History of A Color. Today, the color red is a major component of the RGB color system, a system based upon the way red, green, and blue light are added together to create a large spectrum of color.
