Ocotillo Village Health Club: Colorfully Healthy

The Ocotillo Village Health Club, a high-end health club located in Chandler, Arizona, was recently completed and featured a great array of Dunn-Edwards colors throughout the facility. Deutsch Architecture Group, a Phoenix-based firm, spearheaded the design and build of the 80,000-square-foot facility and created a place where people can not only get fit, but provide space where business deals take shape. Brent Kendle of Kendle Design Collaborative and Butler Design Group worked together to design the exterior and project site. Marcene Kandra, LEED AP, NCIDQ, NAIOP, IIDA, ASID, and senor interior designer at Deutsch Architecture Group stated, “The membership includes many business persons from the high-tech industries in the Chandler area, as well families from the surrounding neighborhoods. The goal of the project is to create a club where members feel comfortable and want to linger, building lasting relationships along the way. Parent company, DMB Sports Clubs, owns and operates three other locations of equal size and amenities in affluent neighborhoods located across the Greater Phoenix Valley.”

The design team, inspired by LEED design constraints, created a space where natural light is maximized. Expansive glass is integral to the design throughout the entry and lounge area walls. This also provides
dramatic views to the exterior landscape details as well as a dynamic angled roof with a deep overhang that provides shade from the hot afternoon Arizona sun and strong lines along South Alma School Road. Kandra further explains, “This unique project site is adjacent to a manmade lake, which served as inspiration for the water-themed artwork throughout the facility.”

To create dramatic focal points throughout the interior, a palette of vibrant colors, contrasting textures and natural materials helped to reinforce the high-energy mission of the health club. Dunn-Edwards colors were used, in deep, saturated tones to define architectural details and volume of the facility.

Upon completion, the health club members were impressed and proud to be part of this beautiful, upscale facility. Kandra declared, “This being a very family-oriented facility, the wide-eyed reactions of the kids was even more fun to watch as they explored from top to bottom.”
