Extreme Odyssey Museum Focus: V&A Dundee
10/24/2018 | Grace Lennon |
Continuing with our Color Trends 2019, we are focusing on designs that explore the color and design of the "Extreme Odyssey" Trend. Designs within this realm attempt to address the influences of technology, context and vernaculars on architecture, as well as challenge conventional architectural practice, explore original paths of thought and develop innovative design tools and methodologies.
Exterior of Museum at Night
Designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the V&A Dundee contains Scotland’s first design museum and seeks to investigate the international importance of design, while presenting the country’s outstanding achievements in the field. The building’s geometric design is inspired by Scotland’s dramatic cliffs, bringing together nature and architecture.
Exterior of Museum
The exterior of the building stretches out over the River Tay as two angular volumes and is comprised of 2,500 cast stone panels.
Museum Reception Area
Inside, the Scottish design galleries feature 300 exhibits drawn from the V&A’s rich collections of Scottish design, as well as from museums and private collections across Scotland and the world. The museum’s light-filled wooden interior and impressive spaces inside have been designed to provide a warm welcome to visitors, as a "living room for the city."
Charles Rennie Mackintosh Oak Room
The centerpiece of the Scottish Design Galleries is the rebuilt interior of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Ingram Street Tearooms. The interior of the Oak Room, which has been in storage since 1971 when the building was demolished, has been restored and reconstructed through a partnership between V&A Dundee, Glasgow Museums and Dundee City Council.
