In celebration of our upcoming 100-year anniversary, we’re going back in time to revisit the evolution of color and innovation across the decades. Complete with 11 color palettes, the Colors of the Decades Collection highlights the most iconic hues from each era. Let's take a look back at the 2000s and the colors that were thriving at the time.
2000s Palette
The 2000s, often called the Aughts, welcomed great change and innovation. With the arrival of the new millennium, technology took center stage and rapidly became a key factor in our everyday lives. While the world was transitioning into a new digital age, there was also a growing awareness of global warming and the need for sustainability, shaping the way people thought about the future.
The rise of technology ushered in a fast-paced environment, sparking a need for balance and tranquility. People started leaning into calmer, rustic colors to create serene spaces that offered an escape from the chaos of the new digital world. Many turned to natural elements for color inspiration, using calming shades like light blue to evoke the peacefulness of water and sky. Others drew inspiration from European sophistication, opting for rust-colored tones that symbolized simpler times.
Among the popular architecture and design styles of the Aughts were Tuscan Revival, Old World European, and Rustic-Chic. As reality TV made its mark on pop culture, people became heavily influenced by design trends shown in some of the era’s most-watched shows. HGTV’s renovation shows like Trading Spaces and Flip This House played a significant role in popularizing Tuscan Revival design. Meanwhile, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, showcased the family’s lavish homes, often featuring warm neutrals and rustic-chic decor. Soon, homeowners around the country began remodeling their own homes in an effort to “Keep Up with the Kardashians.”
It was during this time that the need for sustainability came to the forefront. Low- and Zero-VOC paints grew in popularity as the demand for cleaner, more eco-friendly building materials grew, and architects began to embrace high-performance building design.
The spirit of change and innovation that defined the 2000s was reflected in Dunn-Edwards own evolution. In 2009, Dunn-Edwards expanded upon its legacy of being an eco-friendly manufacturer with the launch of its Greener by Design initiative, reinforcing the company's commitment to the over-arching green principle of eco-efficiency.
In 2004, the company introduced the Perfect Palette® color system, expanding the range of colors available. Designed to meet the needs of design and application professionals, this color system has remained an essential resource for customers for over 20 years.
The 2000s palette has the power to transport us to a calm landscape—an escape from the digital world where we can find pleasure in the simple things. The balance of warm neutrals and dreamy cool tones creates inviting spaces where lively conversations can take place, just like old times.
