A Brief History of Green
Ancient Egyptians viewed the color green as a symbol of rebirth, painting the color on tomb walls. While the color green was relatively sparse in ancient Greek and Roman cultures, western symbology and color expert Michel Pastoureau notes that the color green was a respite for the eyes throughout antiquity. Individuals would focus on green objects in order to take a break from more strenuous eye activity and focus on the soothing properties of the color green.
During the Middle Ages green became associated with spring. It was at this time the color took on many of the associations that it holds today, like hope, nature and change. As a pigment, green was actually a highly toxic and deadly color. In the late 1700s chemist Wilhelm Scheele invented a green hue (coined Scheele’s Green) made with highly toxic arsenic. With its toxicity relatively unknown at the time, the color was used in all manners of art and design. As time passed deep, saturated greens emerged as a favorite during the Art Nouveau period of the late 19th century and continued to reign on into the Art Deco period of the roaring 1920s.
