A History Of Orange-Red

The term vermilion comes from French, and originated because of the brilliant orange-red color  similar to a popular natural red dye made throughout Europe from an insect called Kermes vermilio. Dunn-Edwards’ Vermilion paint color is influenced by the color, color family, and pigment most often derived, from antiquity through the 19th-century, from the powdered mineral cinnabar. 

In fact, cinnabar’s orange-red color has been important to cultures and empires throughout history, from Maya civilizations who used it in royal burial chambers, to ancient Chinese dynasties, among others.
