An Oasis on Cadman: A Raskind Design Inspiration
02/03/2021 | Sara McLean |
When we last visited the Raskinds — the power couple behind several remodels we’ve previously featured — they were finishing up their Los Diego project and already involved the next one: a special overhaul on Cadman Drive in the hills above Los Angeles.
The Camden project is now complete, and we are excited to show you the gorgeous outcome. The Raskinds transformed a large-scale home into a peaceful oasis nestled close to Griffith Park. Join us as we walk through the remodeling process:
Please describe the Cadman property and your design inspiration.
This property is so unique in that it’s an 18,000-square-foot lot featuring a pool and various fruit orchards. The home itself is also large that the grand scale almost felt commercial. My design inspiration was to make it feel like a luxe-bohemian, boutique hotel. Something with a point of view of wellness and relaxation — and feels a bit worldly. This year, especially, we could all use a bit of self-care!
Please describe your design process and aesthetic for this property and any architectural hurdles you faced.
We decided to maintain much of the original architecture but we opened the kitchen so it to flows into the dining area. I created mood boards at the start of the design process that included warm neutrals; palm trees; and organic textures like Zellige tile, wood and natural stone.
I like to design with feeling and a sense of immersion in the space so a lot of the process is on the fly and as I go. We wanted to warm up the home a lot because it felt cold when we acquired the property, so we added a lot of wood elements and warm paint colors throughout.
What Dunn-Edwards colors and products did you use and locations? After using our EXQUISITE product for this property, as well as the Los Diegos property, what are your thoughts the performance properties and sheen level?
One of the key colors we used here was Flintstone (DE6221). We used it on the exterior pool walls, kitchen cabinets, and interior doors and moldings. It’s such a gorgeous soft color and it worked so well with all the various elements of the home.
We also used Black Spruce (DE6308) on the outdoor staircase and planter boxes. It’s a deep, gorgeous green so worked perfectly, as I wanted to lean into all the natural biodiversity around the lot. The exterior paint color is Almond Milk (DEHW01) from the High Hide White collection with Celluloid (DET619) on the trim and the floor of the bamboo terrace.
For interior white, we used the warm and creamy Coconut Grove (DEHW03), also from the High Hide White Collection. The exquisite finish has worn so well, and I love the super matte texture. It’s been more scuff- and stain-resistant than other flat paints.
Continuing the warm and creamy tones inside the home, we used Almond (DEC753) in the living room, Almond Latte (DE6143) in the guest room, and Cashmere (DEC758) as an accent in the master bedroom.
In addition, we used Blue Print (DET575)in the powder room, which played off the Zellige tile beautifully. We added a pop of contrast to the stair risers with cool, dramatic Dark Engine (DE6350).
Did you incorporate the 2021 color trends?
We used many colors from the 2021 trends report. In fact, we carried them over into the finishes and staging, as well. For instance, our tile colors complement the Blue Print (DET575), Almond (DEC753) and Flintstone (DE6221) paint colors — and our kitchen island slab incorporates many of those color tones, too.
What was the outcome of the project?
Our project was a hot home two days after hitting the market and went into escrow within one week! We had a ton of interest, and we just know the new owner is going to have an amazing time in this home. It’s like a mini resort right in the city. Many vendors and guests who visited the home commented that it feels incredibly serene — like a wellness retreat.
What’s next for you?
Next up is a Caribbean-style beach house in Leucadia, Calif. We will be using some fun colors and design elements there so I’m excited to share more soon!
