Poetic Passage: A “Spirited Journey” Through 2019 color+design

Dunn-Edwards recently released its 2019 color+design trends with the theme of “Spirited Journeys.” The five-trend color palettes are showcased in a collection of animated video stories highlighting the textures, materials and cultural references inspiring the looks. The videos were rolled out one at a time earlier this summer.
This annual glimpse at how our culture influences popular colors and design is curated with months of research and analysis to provide the most accurate forecast of color, design and trend information. People are always interested in trending colors but that is just part of the story. The textures and materials pair with color to tell a story about what’s happening in our lives and the world around us. Events like the royal wedding helped shape the trends, as have technology, virtual reality, extreme urbanization, pop culture fashion, food, current everyday life stresses, music and travel.
“Poetic Passage,” our third trends story speaks to the soft and subtle side of life that incorporates nature in a chic, minimalist atmosphere. Shadow and light dance in a marriage of masculine and feminine, luxury and lines. The aesthetic is minimalist, soft and subtle with chic and refined natural basics within tender, cozy atmospheres.
Materials and textures of Poetic Passage are based on luxury classics — opulence on subtle display. Light
velvet; twill; monochromatic jacquard; velvet corduroy; and cocoon-style, pillow-top and satin sheen materials that blend seamlessly into the trend storyline.

Textural shapes include cocoon-style, pillowtop, drapery and fluid shapes. Luminous ambered-glass or resin is cut like precious stones or translucent satins. Texture effects include highly textured marble, chiaroscuro shadow and light play reminiscent of Vermeer paintings, and ultra-lacquered, glossy surfaces.

Patterns highlight chic and glam minimalist couture graphics, subtle precious details, patterns inspired by British wardrobes, including tweeds, tartans, fine classic fabrics and menswear patterns. Neo-geometrics, topstitching, filigree-style and graceful fine lines add subtle dimensions.

The color palette is an introspective, opulent and becoming color palette — understated, demure and delicate, with tones of romance and formality. Soft, tender and delicate coloring capture nostalgic ideals. Delicate, bleached, fresh neutrals, warm naturals are lit by cool, icy tones; casual blues; and tender pinks paired with graphic colors. Sophisticated nude palettes infuse a tender, natural warm range of hues that are transparent and delicate.
