February Color of the Month: Attar of Rose (DET422)
02/01/2022 | Dunn Edwards |
Why Attar of Rose is February’s Color of the Month
With the occurrence of Valentine’s Day, the theme of February is deep, romantic love. That’s why Attar of Rose (DET422), a classic, deep currant red, is our February Color of the Month. It’s the perfect shade to celebrate this romantic holiday. Combine it with Pueblo White (DET675) and Smoke & Ash (DET514) to produce the color scheme of a dozen roses.
February is the month that we associate with love, relationships, romance and red roses. Fittingly, an attar is an essential oil derived from flowers, making this Dunn-Edwards hue the perfect accompaniment to Valentine’s day. That is why this February and Valentine’s Day we’re highlighting this major magenta.
We’ve explored reds recently in some of our Winter Color Crush New Year’s Palettes and also you’ve seen magenta pop up in our Mysa color palette as part of our 2022 Color + Design Trends reveal. For some striking red inspiration, you can see how magentas and pinks can be used to cultivate a sultry set of rooms like in the Claire Thomas-designed Joshua Tree property, Oeste.
A Brief History of Red
Today, the color red is seen as a major component of the RGB color system — a system based upon the way red, green, and blue light are added together to create a large spectrum of color. But in fact, the color red has been an integral color for thousands of years, important to cultures and empires throughout history, like Chinese culture and the Roman Empire, respectively among many others.
Further, the color red is thought to be the archetypal color, the first color humans mastered, breaking down into different shades for use in painting and dyeing, according to Forbes. Its symbolism denotes wealth and power and the fiery passions associated with both love and war. In fact, western symbology expert and author of Red: The History of A Color, Michel Pastoureau, notes that frescoes made from rich red cinnabar (a mercury sulfide) graced many Pompeiian houses communicating luxury to visitors.
Look to February’s color of the month, Attar of Rose (DET422), to represent luxury and boldness in your space. Whether bringing a refined flare to millwork, designing an accent wall, or building an entire room around red, we invite you to wake up and smell the Attar of Rose.
