Why Mountain Bluebird is April’s Color of the Month
Our latest Color of the Month for April, Mountain Bluebird (DET573), is a brilliant blue to help signal the vibrancy of the spring season. This azure blue gets its name from the Mountain Bluebird, a species native to the American West, and the state bird of Nevada, whose appearance in nature is a clear sign of spring. This April Color of the Month paint color is also part of our Then, Now & Forever® Collection, a curated line of 142 historically-accurate paint colors inspired by historic architecture of the American West and 158 trending paint colors. In fact, to form the ideal color palette with this eye catching hue, pair it with other Then, Now & Forever® colors such as soft white, Daydreaming (DET678) and Melt With You (DET655), a warm neutral.

A Brief History of Blue
With April’s color of the month being a blue, we thought we’d explore the unique history of blue. The history of the color blue does not date as far back as the color yellow where instances of its use were found during the Neolithic period. While blue is the color of both sky and sea, its appearance otherwise in nature is sparse. As such, a word for the color blue did not exist even in ancient Greece. It was only once people began to associate the color blue with the Virgin Mary, did this now popular color gain traction with use in manuscripts, stained glass, clothing, paintings, and popular culture.
In 431 A.D. the Catholic church decided to color code the saints, giving Mary a blue robe. Mary’s blue came to be associated with the virtues of innocence and trustworthiness, and eventually this particular hue of blue, eventually known as “navy blue,” would be adopted by militaries, police, and other organizations of authority to denote these similar virtues.
