2020 Modernism Week Guide + Map

Calling all aficionados of architecture and design! The annual celebration of Mid-century modern history and homes is right around the corner, and the projects are close to completion. Not sure what to do when you get there? Here’s a handy list of Dunn-Edwards-sponsored projects to add to your modernist list.

The Guggenheim House

Named the “Guggenheim House” in honor of the legendary Gigi Guggenheim, this 1967 Mid-century home is located in the prestigious Indian Canyons neighborhood. It boasts 2,800 square feet of gorgeous Palms Springs living, including four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a beautiful pool and spa.

The current owners longed to have a place where they could escape from their busy city life. Designer Michael Ostrow of Grace Home Furnishings answered the call and mixed contemporary and vintage furnishings, along with patterns and textures, to create an oasis of sophistication and fun.

Mesa Modern

The evolution of Palm Springs into a mecca of all forms of architecture, including ultra-modern styles, can be seen with the debut of the spectacular Mesa Modern. The intricate mix of influences from around the world are brought to life by designer Michelle Boudreau – think global glam. It features two bedrooms with full views of the San Jacinto Mountains; two bathrooms; a guest house; and a vast outdoor space, designed by landscape architect John Feldman of Ecocentrix, which showcases an agave garden, pool and plenty of places to lay back and soak in the sun.

Herbert Burns’ The Gillman Residence

The Gillman Residence is a showstopper of modernist design by famed architect Herber Burns. It’s also this year’s Showcase Home. Inspired by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier in the style of Late Moderne, the home was once described by architectural historian and author Steven Keylon as one of Burns’ “more lavish homes.” Thomboy Properties has refreshed this 1948 Mid-century gem and stayed true to Burns’ approach, highlighting the natural beauty of the desert landscape with a functional, spacious and light-filled interior. Located in Little Tuscany, this 4,700-square-foot house features three bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths along with a two-bedroom, one-bath guest house.

Axiom Desert House

Step inside this system-built wonder of architecture and design known as the Axiom Desert House. Joel and Meelena Turkel of Turkel Design brought this simple, yet striking, example of prefab, Mid-century design and construction to life. The home not only serves as the Turkel’s personal residence but operates as a Living Lab for designers, students and enthusiasts. It features an open floor plan, innovative materials and net-zero-energy design, as well as the casual blend of indoor/outdoor living that is quintessentially California.

The Cree House

The Cree House is Albert Frey’s most intact residential work. Built in 1955 and overlooking the desert floor, this icon has been owned by a single family since the 1970s. The owner of the house preserved and restored it meticulously, almost to its original condition. The features of the home — strong, jutting balconies with corrugated fiberglass railings; industrial materials; and thin roof overhangs — are hallmarks of Frey’s work. As a special addition for Modernism Week, Mid-century home décor boutique, Modern Hacienda, will furnish the home with original designs by Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson.

CAMP

Come hang out with us at CAMP! Stop by our booth where you can see selected artwork from the artist Shag and an original mural design by artist Caroline Geys. We’ll also have some of our Professional Color Advisors on hand to offer complimentary color consultations. Fellow sponsor Ferguson along with Palm Springs Life magazine will be hosting Color & Cocktails, a panel discussion at its booth featuring Sara McLean, color expert and stylist for Dunn-Edwards and editor of specs+spaces. Last, an interactive, make-it-your-own art piece using Dunn-Edwards paints will be open to the public in the outdoor lounge area!

The Door Tour

Palm Springs is well-known for a few things: a retreat for the old Hollywood elite; dreamy views of sunsets behind the mountains; and colorful, Instagram-friendly doors. This self-guided bike tour begins at The Saguaro Palm Springs hotel, which features bold, colorful hues by Dunn-Edwards, followed by a jaunt through the Indian Canyons neighborhood. You can bring your own bike or rent one at the event check-in at The Saguaro. No bike? No problem — you can also drive the tour at your own pace!
