The final appearance of any stained wood is affected by the unique characteristics of the wood species. Be sure to test a small area to see how the product performs and check its final appearance once dry.

Whether your deck is new wood or was previously coated, sprinkle droplets of water on several areas of the deck to determine if it is ready for staining. If the water ‘beads’ anywhere, you need to prepare the surface by either cleaning or sanding the wood.

If your wood is new and/or treated, it is best to allow it to weather 4-6 weeks then test it again. If new and/or treated wood has to be stained before it can weather, using a wood cleaner and brightener is recommended.

If the water soaks into the wood, it’s ready to be stained.

First, gather your tools:

• garden hose or pressure washer
• bucket
• applicator tools (roller with
a long handle and a trim brush)
• painter’s tape
• scrub brush (long handle)

Choose a wood cleaner that is formulated to remove mildew, dirt and foreign matter from the surface. After cleaning, use a wood brightener to remove discoloration caused by tannin bleed, which commonly occurs in redwood and cedar wood species. This step also opens the wood grain to more readily accept the new stain. When using wood cleaners and brighteners, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use.

Examine all surfaces for signs of loose wood fibers, splintering or any other issues. Sand and repair them as needed. Dust any debris off the surfaces before proceeding to apply new coats of stain.

Your deck may have been built using some metal parts such as anchors, footings and straps. Although STAINSEAL Exterior Solid-Color Deck, Fence & Siding Stain does provide some protection against rust and corrosion, it is best to first prime these surfaces with an appropriate metal primer to improve durability.

Once the deck is clean and dry, it’s time to stain. Stir the stain well and always keep a few rags on hand for spills or drips. Just like any painting project, cut in around the edges with a brush, then cover the large areas using a roller with a long handle so you can stand and move freely. Work quickly, as the first coat will penetrate into the wood. Following the direction of the grain, coat three boards at a time, working along the entire length to a natural break. Let it dry for a minimum of 4 hours then recoat using the same method.

The second coat will even out the finish and the color will deepen and intensify.
