PPE – What you Need to Know to Better Protect Yourself

Even in the best of times, paint contractors face several risks — from working with volatile chemicals to breathing hazardous dust particles. Yes, cities and states are slowly re-opening, yet COVID-19 remains a threat — which makes Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) more important than ever. Unfortunately, unclear PPE guidelines and often out-of-stock items only make things harder.

We at Dunn-Edwards understand your challenges in these unusual times. Therefore, here are some ideas to help you determine the right PPE that will keep you — and your clients — safe and healthy:

Jobsite conditions

• While particular filters/dust masks are suitable during surface preparation and when applying water-based paint jobs in open areas — respirator masks are highly recommended when using oil-based painting poorly unventilated areas.
• Also, if you’re working an interior job, ask the homeowner for a signed letter that states you are allowed inside. This ensures that, if you run into an issue with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), you are covered.

Materials

• The type of paint and preparation/application methods you use also determine the appropriate PPE. For example, durable cloth or leather work gloves are great for sanding but unsuitable for paints and thinners. Also, water- and oil-based paints call for impermeable gloves, while paint thinners require solvent-resistant gloves.
• It’s important to note that, due to lower mask inventory, you can purchase face shields, which are in stock (limited supply). Check with your city’s local regulations to make sure your purchase is compliant.
